Transportation & Maps

In addition to driving, riding the bus and cycling are common ways to get around the city. Madison is known for its excellent biking paths. All UW Madison students receive a free bus pass to utilize the City of Madison Metro Bus System. The Dane County Regional Airport serves the Madison area.

As the capital of Wisconsin, Madison has a population of approximately 200,000. The city features an abundance of natural beauty complemented by many lakes and is a cultural mecca offering arts, music, entertainment, sports and much more. The University of Wisconsin is situated next to Lake Mendota, which offers outdoor enthusiasts limitless opportunities. On State Street, visitors will find specialty shops, restaurants, bookstores, coffee houses, and the Overture Center. The upper end of State Street boasts the capitol square, a host of free art fairs, the farmers market and Madison Symphony Orchestra concerts in the summer.

Located in the South Central part of the state of Wisconsin, Dane County is home to Madison along with rural towns and villages. Surrounding communities offer great resources and opportunities; Milwaukee is Wisconsin’s largest city and is only just over an hour drive from Madison. The recreation, culture, and natural beauty extend far beyond the city limits.
