Gao and Chen win COVID-19 Data Challenge, Task 1

Congratulations to graduate student Jifan Gao and Assistant Professor Guanhua Chen for their winning entry to Task 1 of the Pediatric COVID-19 Data challenge! Their submission, titled “A Model for Predicting Need for Hospitalization,” earned them the top spot, as well as a $100,0o0 prize to the University.

The Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), the NIH National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), the NIH Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Maternal and Child Health Bureau partnered to sponsor the Pediatric COVID-19 Data Challenge.

The purpose of this competition is to develop algorithms and computational models that would help physicians predict which pediatric COVID-19 patients are likely to develop severe complications, including multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).
