BMI affiliate Dr. Matt Churpek and colleagues published an analysis of 4,019 severely ill COVID-19 patient outcomes at 70 hospitals. The study incorporates a mix of hospital system and patient characteristics that may increase death from COVID-19 among critically ill patients.
They found that the biggest determinants of death were how ill the patient was when admitted to the ICU, the overall socioeconomic status of the population each hospital serves, and the level of hospital strain. According to Dr. Churpek, the findings suggest that COVID-19 may be exacerbating existing healthcare disparities in the US.
Congratulations to Dr. Churpek and colleagues on this important publication.
